Argot Description

The Sonoma Coast is dramatic ridge lines, thick fog, crisp ocean breezes and giant Redwoods. Each year Hawk Hill Pinot Noir beautifully translates this terroir to the glass. Cool flavors of wild, black fruits mingle with distinctive notes of pine resin, peat smoke and sweet baking spices. The 2013 rendition of our Hawk Hill Pinot Noir is gorgeous, deep and complex, with incredible focus and precision.

In addition to all the wonderful aromas and flavors on display in each swirl, sniff and sip, it is the profound depth of textures that sets this wine apart from its peers. Cool, plush and luxurious, on the palate is where the vineyard's pedigree truly shines through. An expression of Pinot Noir found nowhere else in the world.

Located at the intersection of three highly esteemed Pinot Noir growing regions--Sebastopol Hills, Freestone and Green Valley--Hawk Hill is one of the great terroirs in California. The vineyard was planted in the 90s on an furiously steep, sandy hillside with significant coastal influences of fog and maritime winds. On even our warmest summer days, Hawk Hill struggles to push the mercury into the mid-80s.

Due to these challenging conditions and the rugged coastal landscape, radical farming protocols must be executed to persuade Hawk Hill to ripen its crop. Aggressive leaf pulling and severe crop thinning practices are conducted throughout the season. In truly great vintages, like 2012 and 2013, we just barely bump up against harvesting three tons of grapes per acre.

The two clones at Hawk Hill express the vineyard in markedly different ways. The Pommard, planted at the top of the hill, is picked first providing power and depth to the cuvee. The 115 clone, planted lower on the hill, brings nuance and grace to the mix adding florality, high tones, a sense of ethereality and the wonderfully elusive Pinot-osity to the bouquet.

Wine Advocate: 92 Points

From the Sonoma Coast, the 2012 Pinot Noir Hawk Hill Vineyard offers a distinctively different aromatic profile. Aromas of cranberries, mulberries, sweet cherries, spice and earth emerge from this savory 2012. With sweet tannin, a broad, medium to full-bodied mouthfeel and lots of complexity and flavor depth, it is another successful effort from this producer. Drink it over the next 5-7 years.
